THE COMPLAINER TOURS AGAIN

Global Electronic Simulacra
In Vinyl Leaves, Stephen Fjellman’s compelling book about Walt Disney World, the author describes with wonder the rides and shops there as simulacra - “shells covered both inside and out with symbolic architecture and design.” Disney attendees are described as both pilgrims and tourists, where “the activity of touring includes leaving home to travel and experience at least the illusion of being somewhere else.” What is fake and what is real? In today’s world it doesn’t much matter anymore. The fake is real. As consumers are we getting the copy or the original? Or the copy of something that never existed?

The explosion of the Internet over the past ten years has provided new ways for people to be tourists from their own homes (or global Internet cafes). Even more recently, Google Maps, MySpace, and YouTube, just to name a few, have opened up new worlds of possibilities for instant tourism and expression without boundaries. What are the possibilities and consequences of all this? Now anyone from any culture can be a cultural imperialist, colonizing wherever they may. The questions are endless, but for now, let’s ask: What do you get when you combine Polish and Spanish? Is English still English when it appears in a song and doesn’t much resemble English to native English speakers but has a resonance with second language learners who may be able to relate to this language in a symbolic way that native speakers can’t completely understand? ...
